In Sweden, the Allemansrätten (Right of Public Access) generally allows you to pitch your tent for a night in nature. However, there are important rules to follow:
When is camping allowed?
- For individuals or small groups (up to 5 people): You may camp in remote areas as long as you stay away from houses and private property.
- For larger groups (more than 5 people): Large groups are not covered by the Allemansrätten and must use the official DANO campsites or obtain permission from the landowner.
Important rules for wild camping
- Keep your distance: Stay well away from houses, summer cottages, or other private buildings.
- No fires outside designated fire pits: Especially in summer, open fires outside official campsites are strictly prohibited (see our information on making fires).
- Respect bird protection islands: These are marked during the nesting season and must not be entered.
- Leave no trace: Take all your belongings and waste with you when you leave.
Tip: If you plan to stay for an extended period or travel with a larger group, we recommend using the DANO camp spots. They are well-equipped with fire pits and access to dry toilets. Find more information here.
