Dalsland is one of the best paddling destinations in Europe – vast, unspoiled, and surrounded by breathtaking nature. Most waterways and lakes offer plenty of peace and space, allowing you to paddle undisturbed. During the summer months, you will naturally encounter other paddlers, but that’s part of the charm here. Even in peak season, you’ll find plenty of quiet areas to fully immerse yourself in nature. For an even more peaceful experience, consider visiting outside the main holiday periods.
When is it the quietest?
- May to June or September: In these months, you’ll often feel like you have the lakes all to yourself. Most campsites are empty, and you can enjoy nature in solitude.
- Peak season (late June to mid-August): You will encounter more groups, but the paddlers are well distributed across the many lakes and waterways.
Can I wild camp?
Groups of six or more people are required to use the official DANO campsites. If you’re seeking solitude, smaller groups can find other camping spots in nature. However, be sure to follow Sweden’s Allemansrätten (Right of Public Access) and adhere to the following rules:
- Avoid camping near private property: Maintain a sufficient distance from residential homes, summer houses, and other inhabited buildings.
- June to the end of August: Fires are only permitted at the designated fire pits on the official campsites. A general fire ban applies elsewhere during this time.
- Respect bird protection zones: These are marked by signs and must not be entered during the nesting season.
- Leave no trace: Pack out all your waste and dispose of it responsibly.
