The equipment you need depends on whether you’re renting a kayak or a canoe and how long your tour is planned. Here’s our recommended packing list, which you can adjust based on your preferences:
Essential gear for all paddlers (kayak and canoe)
- Waterproof bags or drybags: For clothing, electronics, and valuables (available in various sizes at our rental station).
- Change of clothes: Functional, quick-drying clothing is ideal.
- Rain gear: Weather changes can occur at any time.
- Shoes: Waterproof or quick-drying shoes for paddling and sturdy shoes for walking on land. Never wear rubber boots—they can fill with water in the event of a capsize and become dangerous.
- Hat and sunscreen: Essential protection from direct sunlight.
- Water bottles: At least 2 liters per person per day.
Additional gear for canoe paddlers
- Tarp or large cover: To protect gear from rain.
- Camping chair or seat cushion: Canoes offer enough space for added comfort during breaks.
Camping gear
- Tent, sleeping pad, and sleeping bag: Tents and sleeping pads can be rented from us.
- Stove or camping cooker: Trangia cooking sets are available on-site.
- Lightweight, durable food: Consider lactose-free dairy products as they have a longer shelf life.
- Eating utensils, cutlery, and trash bags
- Pocket knife: Please note that knives cannot be carried openly in Sweden.
Other important items
- Dalsland Canal map: Available on-site or can be pre-ordered.
- First-aid kit: Bandages, disinfectant, pain relievers
- Mosquito repellent: Normal mosquito repellent is sufficient, as Dalsland typically has fewer mosquitoes.
- Power bank or spare batteries for electronic devices
- Small axe or saw: Useful for cutting wood at DANO campsites
- Flashlight or headlamp
Neoprene clothing – when is it useful?
Neoprene clothing is normally not necessary when paddling our boats, as you typically stay dry. However, it can be a useful safety measure in the early spring or late autumn when water temperatures are very cold, in case of a capsize.
