The ideal daily distance depends on your group size, paddling experience, and any additional activities you have planned. Here are some general guidelines to help you plan:
General Recommendations
- Solo paddlers (in a K1 kayak): 15 - 20 km per day
- Two-person teams or couples: (in a K2 or C2): 12 - 18 km per day in kayak, 10 - 15 km per day in canoe
- Groups: 8 - 12 km per day (in either kayak or canoe)
Groups generally require more time due to varying speeds, coordination, and breaks for meals or activities.
Factors influencing your daily distance
- Activities: If you plan to fish, swim, or take long breaks, opt for shorter daily routes.
- Portages and locks: Allocate 30 to 60 minutes for each lock or portage on your route.
- Weather conditions: Strong headwinds or waves can significantly slow down canoes. On calm days, you may be able to cover longer distances more easily.
- Rest days: Consider scheduling a rest day, such as at one of the scenic DANO campsites, especially for longer trips.
